Belief systems are like graveyards. Tombstones are engraved with great permanence and extremely difficult to change. Beliefs are very similar in that once a person has established a belief, and lived with that belief for a time, it is sometimes impossible for that person to consider that a belief may be untrue, even when there is strong evidence against it.
It may not be a complete coincidence that the acronym for “BELIEF SYSTEM” is “BS”.
Any intelligent person can readily see that beliefs are initially established, at an early age, by our environment and the people of influence in our lives. Thus, each society has a different set of beliefs, and each one believes their beliefs are the correct ones, no matter how conflicting they are with others.
A belief system should never be considered faultless, lest it become an impediment to growth and knowledge. Belief systems should be ever changing and open to new truths as they are revealed.
One day all religions will be as “one” and there will be world peace. But this will not happen as long as people respond to this idea with the phrase “that will never happen”. They are correct, it will not happen as long as they keep reinforcing the belief that it will never happen.
Some say a belief must be true if millions of people believe it. But an untruth will still be an untruth no matter how many people are duped into believing it.
Some say a belief must be true because it has been around for a long time. But time alone cannot change an untruth into a truth.
A truth which is not believed is still a truth, no matter how much coercion is used to convince one to the contrary.
In Galileo’s day, the church insisted that the earth was the center of the universe and was stationary and that the sun revolved around the earth. Galileo proved that this belief was untrue and , for that, he was put on trial, convicted of heresy, made to recant his findings in order to save his life, and made to live under house arrest for the rest of his life. Out of earshot of the nasty bishops he was heard to yell “but it still moves”. So much for freedom of thought.
We still have the same thing today, except it is a little more insidious in the method used to control the mind. Fear of punishment in an afterlife is now used to get people to adhere to religious teachings. Religions will try to convince through the use of logic. They will say that the only safe thing to do is to believe as we say for the following reason. If what we tell you is true, then you will be saved. If what we tell you is not true, then you really haven’t lost anything. The problem with this line of reasoning is that there are hundreds of religions with different sets of rules and only one can be true or none may be true. So which one of the many do you choose. It’s very doubtful that the use of fear to gain converts is of any value to God.
All to often, believers choose to be “WILLFULLY IGNORANT”. To be open to the truth can be traumatic in that it exposes one to ridicule from those who still cling to the old untruths.
This brings up another problem with religions. Those in charge feel compelled to stick with the old untruths in an effort to save face. A congregation does no look kindly on a leader that admits to leading them astray.
World peace will not be achieved until all religions strive to understand the SCIENCE OF GOD and promote LOVE and FREEDOM above all else.
As long as religions insist on any form of bondage and discrimination, there will be unnecessary turmoil and strife in the world. We must stop teaching that bondage is a virtue approved by GOD.
Only when the vast majority of people realize that they have a right to freedom, and act decisively, will thugs and despots be prevented from gaining power and control.
Where there is total LOVE, evil cannot survive.
